How to Rock a Winter Hat

Ladies, we’re all in this together. And by “this” we mean the sometimes unbearable cold. Sure, furry, cozy, knit layers are awesome and fashionable and make getting dressed a breeze. Boots are obviously one of the very best fashion accessories ever created. Giant scarves and leather gloves make every winter outfit complete. Hot chocolate and cinnamon tea and beautiful snow and… Wait, where were we? Oh, right. Winter wear. One pretty crucial winter accessory that sticks out like a sore thumb is the hat, with whom we probably all have a love-hate relationship with. Love because it’s seriously one of the warmest pieces of our outfits and without it we would never venture beyond the confines of our heated homes, and hate because it is just so darn hard to wear with style.

Luckily, there are a few things you can do to up your hat game this winter with minimal effort. Want to know more? Duh!

Leave your hair out. Yes, we know, hat hair can be a disaster, but you need to leave some locks out to frame and soften your face. If you have bangs, you’re a lucky gal- long hair and wind is a tough combination. If you have hair that creases easily, consider a low ponytail or messy braid to hide any dents more easily. If you plan to take your hat off a lot throughout the day, stash a few dryer sheets in your purse to get rid of static. You may also want to have a light moisturizer or hair cream on standby, and you can always fall back on a sleek ponytail if all else fails.

Look for texture. Cable knit, sequins, pom-poms and sparkles all channel the spirit of winter and will automatically give your look a boost. Don’t be afraid to make a statement with an oversized style or bold color! Keeping warm is stylish and there is no reason to throw on a hat as an embarassed afterthought. Beanies, berets, ski hats, trappers…. They’re all legit! If you live in a city that’s less windy, wool fedoras also make a great accessory that pairs well with pearls and long, drapey layers.

Take care of your face. There’s nothing to do about it, a hat draws focus to your face. Keep your skin bright and your complexion clean and healthy by moisturizing, drinking plenty of water, and using minimal neutral makeup. A couple sneaky tricks include penciling in your brows, lining your lips and making sure to wear mascara on your upper and lower lashes. Don’t forget a pair of earrings to brighten your face!
