How to Choose a Clasp?

Choosing a clasp for your pearl strand- it sounds like such a simple task. Or is it??? Did you know that there are separate clasps depending on how many strands of pearls you have? And they have special clasps to prevent your clasps from flipping over. How to choose? Pearl & Clasp is happy to help out!

The first thing you need to know is that clasps differ according to how many strands of pearls you have.

Single Strand Clasps

If you have a single strand of pearls then your clasp needs to be appropriate for a single strand of pearls so it does not flip over.  It is very common for single strand clasps to flip over and there are several options that you have to help prevent flipping.

  • Purchase a clasp that is the similar in size to your pearls to prevent flipping. The larger the clasp is in comparison to the pearls, the more chance that it will flip over.

  • You can have the rings of the clasp made to be slightly off-center. This will not be noticeable to the wearer but it will help prevent flipping.

  • Purchase a double-sided clasp. A ball clasp such as a diamond ball clasp can serve the purpose of being both beautiful and resolving the problem of flipping.

  • if you found a clasp that you love but it is single sided, we can custom design most clasps to be double-sided to ensure that you receive the clasp you love and it will not flip.

How to Choose a Multiple Strand Clasp

A multiple-stranded piece of jewelry presents less of a problem with regards to flipping. However, it is important to think about if you want the clasp to be the same size as your pearls, smaller or larger. If the clasp is much smaller than the pearls, then there is a good chance that you will not be able to string all of your pearls to the clasp. If you measure the width of all your pearls when they are laying next to each other, you can compare this measurement to the clasp size. This will give you a good idea if the clasp is smaller or larger than your pearls.  For example: if you have two strands of 6 mm pearls, then together your total is width 12mm. It is best to use a clasp that is 11-13mm for these pearls. If you go any smaller than 11mm, the pearls will probably not fit on the clasp. If you go larger, you just have to make sure that you like the style of the clasp being much larger than the pearls.  If you know the size of your pearls, it is very simple to measure the total width and that can help you choose a clasp that will look great with your pearls.  However, our team is here to help you choose the right clasp for your pearls.
