If they made pearl spotting an Olympic event, so many of us would definitely make that team. The most recent spotting was the May 2012 issue of Vogue Magazine. The iconic magazine had the wisdom to put the magnificent Scarlett Johansson on that cover, complete with a gorgeous pair of pearl drop earrings.
Scarlett, who made her film debut at age 10 in the movie North, is a chameleon when it comes to her looks. She has been blonde, brunette, even a redhead, has had long hair, a pixie-short cut, it’s been straight, curly, beach-blown, and she manages to look amazing in every style. One minute she’s Marilyn, the next she’s Mia Farrow in Peyton Place. She doesn’t just pull off any hairstyle; Scarlett can wear any clothing style or color. She happens to look particularly fabulous in the deep-V, off the shoulder, wrap dress that she’s wearing in the Vogue cover photo.
Scarlett’s sense of style is reflected in how she wears pearls. She has a beautiful long neck that, when wearing a deep-V of the type on the Vogue cover, she typically leaves bare, bringing more drama and focus to her striking features. When wearing a low scoop neck that most women would likely leave bare or pair with a gold chain, however, Scarlett throws in a short strand of large pearls that looks amazing.
A pair of pearl drop earrings with no other jewelry is a look Scarlett repeats often. Whether her hair is pulled back in a careless up-do, or swept back in a style reminiscent of the 1940s, pear drop earrings are a great frame for any face, not only a million-dollar one like Scarlett’s.
Of course, the most famous pairing of Scarlett Johansson and a pair of pearl drop earrings didn’t take place at a premiere, awards show, or just an evening out. It was in the film, Girl with the Pearl Earring, the fictionalized story of the famous painting by Johannes Vermeer in 1667. In the film, Scarlett plays Griet, a servant of Vermeer’s, with whom he becomes infatuated. Vermeer convinces Griet to put on a pair of his wife’s pearl drop earrings, and only then does he find the magic to create brilliant art.
Of course, we know that pearls have a magic all their own. Something Scarlett Johansson is obviously aware of, as well.
